she ended up as a sail training vessel called the jolly roger in malta :) scrapped about 15 years ago
ReplyDeleteSundancer was launched in 1971 into the Exeter basin, having been designed and built by Len Last in Longdown. She was rigged by Spencers at Cowes and was, I was told, capable of outrunning the photographer's launch, at over 20knots. She had some unusual features for the time apart from her dimensions (104'x12' x14' draught). These included two identical semi-balanced spade rudders forrard and aft (not linked), a narrow deep vertical keel, with a plate on the bottom to prevent end losses - this could be lifted on hydraulic rams to give a motoring draught of under 7', 3 identical "fore-triangles" to allow a smallish sail wardrobe to suffice, very high ballast ration (10 tons of lead on a 30 ton displacement from memory), and the ability to plane with complete control and stability. The photos above appear to be on her 6th or 7th circumnavigation. She was bought "under duress" by a Maltese company and stripped, had a huge amount of incompetent work done on her, and never sailed again. She did a hell of a lot of seamiles in her time; pretty good for a light steel hull - only really comparable with British Steel in that regard. A great little ship that really looked after her crew.
