Ron Holland.
ReplyDeleteThat is the original Golden Apple, the One Tonner designed by Ron for Hugh Coveney in Ireland. Her success led to Ron setting up shop in Cobh and the string of success that followed.
ReplyDeleteGolden Apple of the Sun & Silver Apple of the Moon were Holland designed sisterships, both for Hugh, which competed in the '79 Admirals Cup. One of them was abandoned (later recovered) during the fastnet race after her rudder stock had broken. The name I recall derives from a WB Yeats poem.
Silver Apple of the Moon belonged to Clayton Love.
ReplyDeleteMy father, Tony Van Hee, owned a 36' Ron Holland designed, aluminium one tonner called Silver Apple which raced in the 1979 Fastnet among others. We sold her in about 2001, perhaps earlier after two decades of fun racing her on the North East coast including a number of North Sea, Channel and Trans-Atlantic crossings.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know where she is now if anyone knows.
