E.Dubois, 3/4 Ton.
ReplyDeleteI raced her at La Trinité sur Mer in France 80's
Rakau is a Stephen Jones 1 tonner (27.5 ft IOR), launched in 1981, I think built by the Webb brothers in Lymington for a couple of New Zealanders based in the UK. I raced against her in the 81 Lymington spring series. She was a stunning looking boat with her marquetry transom and very succesful, being RORC yacht of the year one year. Was later sold to France but no idea of her after that.
ReplyDeleteWould love to here she's still around & being looked after!
She is still around. I saw her on 10 May 2013 at Veere (the Netherlands), lovingly maintained, under Dutch flag. Unfortunately I had no camera at hand.
ReplyDeleteThere is a picture on Marine Traffic at this link: http://photos2.marinetraffic.com/ais/showphoto.aspx?mmsi=244032059&imo=0
ReplyDeletea lovely little boat, I did the Fastnet on her in 81 prior to the Whitbread
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure she was built in Burridge near the Hamble not in Lymington. She had a refit there too. Raced against her in Solent Points and always a favourite of mine. Patrick Pym helmed her quite a bit.
ReplyDeleteJust found this which give more info...http://www.histoiredeshalfs.com/One%20Tonner/OJo%20Rakau.htm
ReplyDeleteI was on Creamcracker with Hoppie, just lost out to Rakau.
Seen under Dutch flag in Salcombe this summer ('19). Converted for cruising. Still stunning. Raced against her in Torbay Admiral's Cup in the early '80s.
ReplyDeleteWalk down memory lane - tied to the mast after st.malo - crew past out under table at awards ceremony 1st place. Provisions back across the channel - French bread and brandy ..massive storm knocked all electronics and I had to call in late 2 days work at the RORC - kiwis always,,,
ReplyDeleterakau was an amazing sailing vessel in spite of her drunken crew,😘
ReplyDeleteLoved her and her crew -best life memories ever -
DeleteHow did you know she had a drunken crew? Did I know you?
DeleteThey went hand in hand - but she was special - thank God she didn't need a competent crew
ReplyDelete❤️
ReplyDeleteLoved my times with Rakua and her drunken sailors
I was always safe - even when tied to the mast.
Sail on sailors - proud to have been in Bermuda to watch next incredible generation of kiwi sailors take the cup,⛵
