Response - One Ton IOR Yacht - Lymington

Response - One Ton IOR Yacht pictured here in the 1980's at Lymington. Do you know what design she is and who designed her ????
Where is this yacht now ?
Is she still racing ?

  1. She was designed by Sture Sunden and built by McQueen in Sweden. She is now sailing out of Bristol. She was on sail in Boatshed until recently so there are pictures on there. Do you have any further pictures?

  2. I owned Response from 1999 until 2007. Her original name was 'Superior', sail number S-87, built in Sweden in 1986. she came to the UK in 1988 and was re-named 'Response, sail number was changed to K1687.

    She raced on the south coast until some time in the early 90s. Beken have quite a few archive photos of her from this period. During this time she lost the white painted double spreader rig in the above photo, and had a new 3 spreader sparcraft rig fitted.

    She was then bought by an airline pilot from Burnham on Crouch. He extended the coachroof, moved the engine aft under the cockpit and fitted a cruising interior. He also changed the rudder, fitted a skeg, and added an extension to the aft edge of the keel and small lead winglets to its tip, plus about 200kg of internal lead.

    I bought her in 1999, for very little money, as she was by this time suffering from serious water ingress into the divinycell foam core, and quite badly delaminating in places. I completely stripped her, removed the entire outer hull skin and foam, and effectively built a new hull around the original inner skin. I also had to dry the deck out, it had over a thousand holes drilled in it at one point. Then injected with about 50 litres of resin to fill all the voids.

    I used her as a short handed cruising boat for a few years, then sold her to a couple in South Dock on the Thames, who also had a Castro one tonner called Justine IV.

    She was then sold again to a syndicate who kept her in Portishead on the Bristol Channel. They also owned the one tonner 'Hero' and kept the two alongside each other.

    Sadly the last time I saw her the owners had let her deteriorate quite a bit, she was sitting in her berth in Portishead looking rather scruffy and uncared for.

    I have since heard that she has recently been sold again and is now in Poland.

  3. Forgot to mention in the above, whilst in the Portishead ownership she had the additions to the keel, and the skeg, removed again, so I believe is now back to her original keel and rudder configuration.

    The rig was also shortened by just under 5 feet while she was in Burnham, and stronger jumper struts fitted, meaning that the runners were no longer critical to keeping it upright. In fact when I bought her she had no runners at all, and had been sailing around quite happily for a number of years without them - although I did re-fit them after the major rebuild.
